Mother’s Sacrifice

NOTE: The picture doesn’t depict the actual occurrence of the story.

This is a true story of Mother’s Sacrifice during the Japan Earthquake.

After the Earthquake had subsided, when the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman’s house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. But her pose was somehow strange that she knelt on her knees like a person was worshiping; her body was leaning forward, and her two hands were supporting by an object. The collapsed house had crashed her back and her head.

With so many difficulties, the leader of the rescuer team put his hand through a narrow gap on the wall to reach the woman’s body. He was hoping that this woman could be still alive. However, the cold and stiff body told him that she had passed away for sure.

He and the rest of the team left this house and were going to search the next collapsed building. For some reasons, the team leader was driven by a compelling force to go back to the ruin house of the dead woman. Again, he knelt down and used his had through the narrow cracks to search the little space under the dead body. Suddenly, he screamed with excitement,” A child! There is a child! “

The whole team worked together; carefully they removed the piles of ruined objects around the dead woman. There was a 3 months old little boy wrapped in a flowery blanket under his mother’s dead body. Obviously, the woman had made an ultimate sacrifice for saving her son. When her house was falling, she used her body to make a cover to protect her son. The little boy was still sleeping peacefully when the team leader picked him up.

The medical doctor came quickly to exam the little boy. After he opened the blanket, he saw a cell phone inside the blanket. There was a text message on the screen. It said,” If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.” This cell phone was passing around from one hand to another. Every body that read the message wept. ” If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.” Such is the mother’s love for her child!!

Ten Years Later: A Tribute 9/11

Tribute to 9/11

My favorite 9/11 tribute in New York City can be found in Bryant Park. 2,819 empty chairs on the lawn facing the site where the World Trade Center once stood, one chair for every life lost. The number of empty chairs captures the enormity of the lives lost and the stark emptiness of it just drives home the point that I hope is never forgotten. 2,819 people were here one moment and gone the next. 2,819 went to work or boarded a plane one morning ten years ago thinking it would be another ordinary day and they never came home.

August 20, 2011 – The Day My Life Changed

Nurses Singing Bicol University HymnFor the past 4 years of studying BSN curriculum, 3 months of review, 2 days of exam and 37 days of waiting, I can say that I am now a certified Nurse! From being a Student Nurse, to Registered Midwife and now, as a REGISTERED NURSE, it is really indeed a worthy wait.

I would like to say my deepest gratitude to everyone who prayed for me, to my school, Bicol University, for giving me the best foundation for 4 years for preparing for the board exam, St. Louie Review Center for making us equipped and ready, to my dearest relatives for the uncondtitional support and love and to my friends who stayed and believed even in the times where I have doubted myself.

To my parents of course, this one’s for you Mom and Dad!

And most especially, to GOD. With Him, IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING. We all trusted Him, and look what happened, He answered my prayer and my question yesterday. Now I know the reason for everything. I COULD NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH. :)

And with this, I would like to CONGRATULATE EVERYONE, MY FELLOW NEW REGISTERED NURSES, WE MADE IT!

SEE YOU ALL AT THE OATH TAKING! Let’s toast and drink to that! :)

 – Demi Marie Sancio Borja, R.M., R.N. –

ALL OF THESE IS TO GLORIFY OUR ALMIGHTY GOD!

By the Candlelight [A Photo Interpretation]

Cupcake Candles

A lot of people say that if one shut their eyes and blew on a candle, all of their wishes would come true. Well, I believed on that. I made the most outrageous wishes. I wished to have a fairy, a prince, and a palace; I wished to grow-up and be just like Cinderella. And, of course, I wished for a thousand more wishes so I would never run out.

I always believed my wishes would come true. But it never happened. Time passed, and I grew older. After a while, I gave up — not only on the candles — but on my wishes as well. The old dreamer within me vanished and was replaced by a harsh teenage cynic who told me over and over that I should have known better than to believe in free wishes. It made me laugh for my past belief in fairies and at the thought of me having my own palace and the make-believe prince. It told me to stop being silly and sentimental and to realize the facts of life, to accept what I was and live with it.

For a while I tried. I abandoned my old dreams, my old ideas, and threw myself entirely into my schoolwork and the whole race of battling for grades and popularity. After a time, I even began to come out ahead and could start each day with a proud face instead of a defeated child. Yet none of it made me really happy. The candles and my dreams kept drifting across my mind.

I tried to forget about both. Yet despite of my best efforts, I continually found myself staring at those candles-making wishes. It wasn’t the same as before, of course. Most of my old dreams and ideals had vanished forever. My dreams were different now, less based on fantasy and more on reality. Dreams of becoming a princess in a castle had changed into hopes of someday living in a beautiful and simple house with my loving husband and kids, or doing a photo shoot with my own models. These were the dreams that floated across my mind now. It was these dreams and the hope of someday fulfilling them that ultimately saved me from falling into the meaningless struggles in my daily life. Without them, I think I would have given up and stumbled off the tracks long ago.

These candles taught me one thing – in order to succeed and survive, you need to find a balance between your dreams and reality. I hadn’t been going after my dreams the right way. Now I know better. I’m beginning to see the light. This time around, when I go into the living room to blow out my candles, my wishes will then come true.

Blow out your candles. Up in the flames. Your dreams may come true.

Environmental Problem – Why is this Happening? [A Photo Interpretation]

A Piece of Slipper in the Flood

Our country is confronted with alarming problems for a sustainable human future. These problems are the ecological consequences of ozone depletion, global warming, soil degradation and increasing air, water and land pollution. Who are to be blamed for all these? Who are held responsible in solving these problems? Is it the government or the people? They say the answer to these questions is – the people.

Saving our Mother Earth is everyone’s responsibility. We should not rely only on our government to solve these problem. Before it’s too late, we have to do something if we want to go on living. We need to realize that to sustain our environment is every man’s responsibility because each one of us contributes to its destruction. First of all, we should change our wasteful and careless ways of living. How? We should dispose our garbage properly. Improper disposal of waste causes pollution of the air, water and soil. It endangers the people’s health. It causes flood and destroys the ozone layer. Proper management of waste is a big solution to our environmental problem. We should recycle waste materials into usable items. We can make a difference in our own little ways as individuals, in our homes, in our schools or work places. We should help conserve trees in our backyards, parks and forests. We should support the reforestation activities of the government and all other programs for the preservation of our environment. We should join or volunteer in environmental organizations. We should take the initiative – act now and save the environment!

As John F. Kennedy said,

Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.

Let’s Fly. Up, Up, Here We Go. [A Photo Interpretation]

Helicopter in the Sky

Did you ever wonder how would it feel to fly? To ride a helicopter and fly above the clouds? I did. Many times. As I thought about it, I often ask myself how it would feel to be free. How would it be to look at people from above?

Did you know that your dreams can give you wings? Even the hardest thing will feel reachable if you believe and dream about it. Every time you think something’s hard to do, remember your goals. Remember what you want, what you dream about. Life is full of choices and obstacles. Through life we need to learn how to make the right choices and how to go through every obstacle life gives us. Dreams give us hope. Dreams give us that feeling that there’s something out there worth fighting for. Don’t let anyone to tell you that you can’t reach your goal. As long as you believe in yourself, you can do anything. Don’t let others make you feel like nothing. Don’t let them to crush your dreams and hopes. You know the saying; ‘Hope dies the last’.

I dream, I believe, I hope. Someday, things will get better. Someday, the world won’t be so dark. You won’t hide your real you. You’ll take that ride and fly, carried by your dreams. Just believe. Believing is the key to making it real.

Believe. Fly away.

Live Fast. Die Young. [A Photo Interpretation]

Rizal Street at Night

Many times in life, nothing will go the way it was planned. The meaning of life is a tricky thing. It will kick you in the butt one day. And help you up the next. Life can be trouble but not all the time. Your best friend may turn and stab you in the back. But in the process of losing a friend, you may just meet a new one. So do not shut the door for good in a bad situation.

A beautiful life will always be worth living. It can take us on many journeys but it is up to us on what journey fits for our future. When we are having fun, time passes swiftly away. In contrast, when we have nothing to do, time hardly passes by. A second seems longer than a minute, a minute longer than an hour. However, 18 hours seem just 18 minutes when it’s fun, when we are engaged in something we enjoy doing. When we talk with a broader point of view, we say life is too short to live to the full for those who are enjoying it. But for someone who is not at all enjoying life or whatever he is doing, life is too long. For such people, this life could have been more fun. Interestingly, it seems that they wouldn’t know what life is until they live like a breathing corpse, because for wise men living is something totally different to staying alive.

With this, I can say that the only way to know for sure if a path is right for you is to take it and enjoy the ride all the way to the end. Unfortunately the wheel of life can allow so many misdirection plays and crossing of paths. There are many paths to choose from and every decision on one’s life can lead further down a path or force you to back up. Many people believe in one life path and stick with it while others try to follow every path they get a hint of. Only one person can make this decision of a single or multiple path life and that person is you.

Everyone should enjoy their life and forget about what might happen next. Yes, we are all indeed taking different roads through our lives but we will all have the same end.

A Guide for Shooting Stunning Sunset Photos

If you like taking sunset photos, you’re not alone. Many photographers I know love to take shots of beautiful sunsets, including me of course. Perhaps it’s because sunset daze awakens a sense of peace in us.

Sunset is an inspirational subject for any photographer. In fact, a good sunset photo is often the reason many people become interested in nature photography. You don’t need to have the best camera or a professional training; almost anyone with a camera can take great sunset photos.

The great news is, photos of sunset are surprisingly easy to take. Perhaps they’re a challenge to take given the small time window comes around sundown. You need to be very attentive and fire off many shots during the few seconds in which the sun goes down.

The Horizon

Here are my tips for taking great sunset photos:

• Tip #1

When shooting sunsets, it’s important to always be ready. The effect which is brought by the sunset may last for only a few minutes so your camera should always be prepared. Once gone, it will not come back. So as an outdoor photographer, you always need to be ready for the right picture. And also, as what I’ve said on my introduction, just keep shooting for you to get in as many shots as you can and select the best you can and not waste any moment from it.

• Tip #2

Know how to position yourself so that you get a full view of the sunset. As for me, I always love to photograph beach sunset photos where I can catch the sun reflecting off water. Think about different, creative ways of viewing a sunset. It will help enhance the beauty of your shots.

• Tip #3

Another tip I recommend is to shoot the sun off-center. It’s not necessary to keep the sun right in the center of the photo. You can position the horizon at bottom of the frame, so that you can highlight the sky, or perhaps focus on a subject in the foreground. With this, you can get many interesting silhouette effects.

• Tip #4

The most important part of a sunset is the sun. But sun alone cannot make your pictures wonderful. Try to identify some object that stands well above the horizon and has a shape that will create a good silhouette. It doesn’t have to fill up your picture. In fact, it may only take up a small area – that will only make the sky seem even more impressive. Example of this are the clouds, when light passes from them you get various shades and you can get different patterns from this.

• Tip #5

A good thing to try is to use multiple exposure settings to get the best shot. Experimenting with exposure is very important for getting the best looking sunset photos. It works. It can help in putting all the things in foreground to look dark or having a photo in more saturated colors. Just be creative. There are no hard and fast rules.

• Tip #6

Patience is a virtue” makes absolute sense in photography. You need to wait for the right moment and be ready to click. At times you might have to hold the camera for several minutes in order to get the perfect picture you are looking for. Sunset is like a process. It takes a little time for the sun to set completely. But throughout the process you get huge variations and good chances to take a good picture. Just be patient to get various shades and colors in the big sky during sunset.

So there you have my simple tips on sunset photography. Notice that I have concentrated on creativity, not technology. It is really true that sunset photos are a pleasure to take. However, they do pose challenges that are unique. Well for me, exposing a good sunset photo is not difficult; the challenge is to make your photo stand out from the rest. With practice, your sunset photos will start looking better and better. Just try to apply the above tips in your next sunset photo shoots – I’m sure you’ll start getting better results. Good luck and happy shooting!

Because Beautiful is a Feeling [A Photo Interpretation]

When the Sun Goes DownThey say beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. I agree with that because beauty deals from within your soul. People have different ideas and tastes, so ideas on something beautiful vary from person to person. This is proven when you look around in the world which we all share.

Sunset – one word can make a lot of memories alive in a second. No matter how many beautiful sunsets I see, I still get fascinated with the view it. Well, who doesn’t? The reason why sunset photography has been one of the most interesting subjects for me is because every sunset is unique with the extraordinary set of clouds and infinite variations of colors in the big sky.

Yesterday afternoon, comes around sundown, I went to Legazpi Boulevard. I just sat there and felt the air very interesting.

I tend to close my eyes often when I’ve had enough of the sky but don’t want to face any other way. My resistance won’t last long because I’m afraid of missing any moment of something fascinating in the clouds and the sky, and the sun. The clouds were calm and grey and if they had emotion they would be experiencing a remarkable day; I thought it was gorgeous.

If you have not ever stayed up outside by nightfall where you can see the transition of the day sky to night sky, you should totally try and stay up for it, because it is beautiful. How the colors of the sky just change over time is really amazing. From being a sky blue heaven, lighting down into soft purples and into dark navy blue sky. It is just wonderful.

Eyes shut, body cold, deep breaths and it was then when I understood my presence in the real world. Sometimes I feel like I never thank God enough. Look at what He has given us. I recommended everyone to experience this for at least once in your lifetime.

P.S. Soon I’ll be posting the things you need to keep in mind while doing sunset photography so that your sunset daze becomes memorable for time to come. So stay tuned for my next post! :)
